Large-scale survey (58,807 undergraduates, 257 institutions) ranking campus free-expression climates — baseline data for practitioners running campus dialogue or bridging programs.
About this research
This annual survey-based report, produced by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) in partnership with College Pulse, ranks the free-expression climate at 257 U.S. colleges and universities based on responses from 58,807 undergraduates surveyed between January and June 2024. It measures students’ comfort discussing controversial topics, tolerance for disruptive protest tactics, and confidence in administrative support for free speech, and documents wide variation across campuses along with a sharp year-over-year rise in students who say the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is difficult to discuss openly.
