About this research
Trust for Public Land’s 2024 special report combines its ParkScore rankings of park systems in the 100 largest U.S. cities with a survey of 868 park-based community programs from 208 organizations and a data-science analysis pairing those rankings against Social Capital Atlas measures of cross-income friendship and volunteering. It finds that residents of top-ranked park-system cities have 26% more social ties between low- and high-income residents, and higher volunteering rates, than residents of lower-ranked cities — concrete social-capital evidence linking park quality to cross-class connection.
