Silence in the Classroom: The 2024 FIRE Faculty Survey Report

Key Finding

IRB-approved survey of 6,269 faculty across 55 four-year institutions finds self-censorship four times higher than during the McCarthy era — relevant baseline for anyone designing faculty-facing dialogue work.

About this research

This national survey, fielded March–May 2024 under IRB approval from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, gathered responses from 6,269 faculty members at 55 four-year U.S. colleges and universities on their experiences with self-censorship and academic freedom. It found self-censorship rates roughly four times higher than researchers’ benchmark for the McCarthy era, with substantial shares of faculty reporting they avoid controversial topics in writing, research, or classroom discussion, and marked disparities in how comfortable conservative versus liberal faculty feel expressing their views on campus.
