National data on the political composition of university faculty — a baseline practitioners can cite when making the case for viewpoint-diversity interventions on campus.
About this research
Rather than new primary data collection, this Heterodox Academy report is a critical review of existing faculty political-diversity surveys and studies, examining reported ratios of left-leaning to right-leaning faculty (ranging from roughly 2:1 to 82:1 across studies since 2012), disciplinary variation, and methodological weaknesses such as low response rates and non-response bias. It finds that the most rigorous, comprehensive studies tend to produce the lowest imbalance estimates, and cautions that framing the issue as a simple Democrat-to-Republican ratio obscures a sizable share of moderate and apolitical faculty. It gives practitioners a baseline for discussing the political composition of university faculty while flagging real limits in how precisely that composition has been measured.
