The Dignity Index Pilot Project Technical Summary

Key Finding

Documents a controlled pilot (Sept 2022) testing whether the 8-point Dignity Index scale can be reliably taught and applied by university students across the political spectrum.

About this research

This technical summary, produced by UNITE in partnership with University of Utah researchers, documents a fall 2022 pilot in which 22 politically diverse student coders were trained to apply UNITE’s 8-point Dignity Index scale to score campaign rhetoric in Utah’s federal races. This is UNITE’s own evaluation of its Dignity Index tool: it reports that with structured training, coders’ agreement improved substantially (an inter-rater reliability score rising from 0.78 to 0.96), suggesting the scale can be taught and applied with consistency across a politically diverse group of raters.
