Which Unity? Whose Diversity? Cultural Mindsets around Pluralism in the United States
Key Finding
Interviews plus a nationally representative survey mapping how Americans actually think about unity versus diversity — a framing and message-testing resource for practitioners communicating about bridging work.
About this research
This FrameWorks Institute report combines 15 stakeholder interviews, 20 cognitive interviews with members of the public, and two nationally representative surveys of roughly 1,240 people each (fielded in July 2024) to map how Americans think and talk about unity versus diversity. It finds that most Americans want more unity but hold vague or conflicting ideas about what that means, and translates those findings into core reframing ideas — such as unity through practical problem-solving — that communicators can use when talking about pluralism.
