Growing Pluralism in America: Understanding the Health & Vibrancy of the Pluralism Ecosystem
Key Finding
The bridging/pluralism field is large and diverse — nearly 800 organizations — but every dimension, including its shared infrastructure and common evidence base, remains in an early “emerging” stage of development.
About this research
Commissioned by New Pluralists and conducted by ORS Impact, this white paper assesses the health of the broader U.S. “pluralism ecosystem” of roughly 800 organizations, funders, and leaders working on bridging, democracy, and belonging, using practitioner and funder interviews and surveys, secondary data, and social network analysis. It scores the field against five criteria — actor diversity, infrastructure, a shared ecosystem-level agenda, a common knowledge base, and resourcing — finding a diverse and well-funded field (over $171 million invested annually) that is nonetheless still “emerging” overall, with notably low connectivity among practitioners, no shared definition of pluralism, and limited common evidence base to guide the work.
